Teacher Feedback Competencies in L2 Writing

Keynote speaker: Prof. Icy Lee

Despite a plethora of research on feedback in L2 writing that generates no shortage of feedback advice in the literature, many teachers still find responding to writing a grueling and frustrating task. This could be due to practical constraints like large class sizes and heavy workload, but it is also possible that teachers lack relevant competencies to implement feedback effectively. Drawing on Richards’ (2010) language teacher competence framework, Lee examines the competencies that L2 writing teachers need for effective feedback practices. She also illustrates how these teacher feedback competencies can be used at different stages of the feedback process to benefit assessment and feedback, as well as teaching and learning. Lee concludes the presentation with implications for practice and research.

Writing teacher feedback literacy: Surveying second language teachers’ knowledge, values, and abilities

Presenters: Prof. Icy Lee and Dr. Zhicheng Mao

Despite a significant rise in awareness of the critical role of assessment literacy, teacher feedback literacy as an important component of assessment literacy has received scant attention in the domain of second language (L2) assessment. This survey study aims to ascertain L2 writing teachers’ self-reported feedback literacy (N = 353) in relation to their knowledge, values, and abilities. Findings of the survey reveal some gaps in the participants’ writing feedback literacy; specifically the teachers reported a basic level of writing teacher feedback literacy in terms of knowledge base but appeared to be less certain of their own abilities to implement feedback practices in the writing classroom, although they largely held values about feedback supported by the literature. The current study could make a novel contribution to existing research by shedding light on the underexplored concept of L2 teachers’ writing feedback literacy, with clear implications for feedback training in teacher education programs.

Feedback in L2 Writing: Lessons from the Past, Visions for the Future

Presenter: Icy Lee (Invited Research Symposium)

The field has witnessed an exponential growth of research on feedback in L2 writing, providing numerous principles to guide teachers’ practices. More recently, there has been increasing attention to the notion of teacher feedback literacy, which focuses on the competencies that L2 writing teachers need in order to implement effective feedback in their classrooms. Despite these developments, feedback remains one of the most daunting challenges for L2 writing teachers. Research, along with anecdotal evidence, suggests that teachers may lack the necessary literacy to effectively utilize feedback in their writing classrooms. In this presentation, I take stock of what we have learnt from extant research on feedback in L2 writing, which significantly contributes to our understanding of L2 writing teacher feedback literacy. Building on lessons from the past, I envision the preparation of future-ready, feedback literate writing teachers who possess the strategies to navigate the evolving landscape of education that is characterized by the emergence of AI tools such as ChatGPT. By empowering teachers to be feedback literate in the era of artificial intelligence, they will acquire the necessary competences to tackle the multifarious challenges arising from a future world where AI is poised to assume an increasingly dominant role.
